Parallel Power Spectral Density Estimate Using Welch’s Method
نویسنده
چکیده
Welch’s method is a power spectral density estimation method that is widely used in spectral analysis for discrete signals. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a neuroimaging technique which records magnetic fields inside human brains as discrete signals. Measurements are done by hundreds of channels of magnetometers mapping to different regions of a human brain. To help find out what is going on in an experiment subject’s brain, it is often necessary to obtain the strength of frequency components (i.e. the spectral density) of the magnetic fields. In current mainstream desktop computers, running MATLAB’s pwelch() function on data recorded by all channels in a 7-minute long experiment could take several minutes, with most computational time spent on fast Fourier transform. This project explores the possibility to parallelize Welch’s method in C language with different FFT libraries and reduce the total time running Welch’s method on hundreds of streams of signals. The two FFT libraries used are FFTW3 and cuFFT. OpenMP is used for parallelization.

The probability density of spectral estimates based on modified periodogram averages
Welch’s method for spectral estimation of averaging modified periodograms has been widely used for decades. Because such an estimate relies on random data, the estimate is also a random variable with some probability density function. Here, the pdf of a power estimate is derived for an estimate based on an arbitrary number of frequency bins, overlapping data segments, amount of overlap, and typ...
متن کاملSpectral Analysis of Clock Noise: A Primer
The statistical characterization of clock noise is important for understanding how well a clock can perform in applications where timekeeping is important. The usual frequency domain characterization of clock noise is the power spectrum. We present a primer on how to estimate the power spectrum of clock noise given a finite sequence of measurements of time (or phase) differences between two clo...
متن کاملA Case Study on the Comparison of Non-parametric Spectrum Methods for Broken Rotor Bar Fault Detection
Broken rotor bars in an induction motor create asymmetries and result in abnormal amplitude of the sidebands around the fundamental supply frequency and its harmonics. Applying a spectrum analysis technique on motor current and inspecting the spectrum amplitudes at the broken rotor bar specific frequencies for abnormality is a well-known procedure for broken rotor bar fault detection and diagno...
متن کاملRoundoff noise analysis for digital signal power processors using Welch's power spectrum estimation
In this paper, we present an analysis for the noise due to finite word length effects for digital signal power processors using Welch’s power spectrum estimation technique to measure the power of Gaussian random signals over a frequency band of interest. The input of the digital signal processor contains a finite-length time interval in which the true Gaussian signal is contaminated by Gaussian...
متن کاملThe seasonal cycle of N2O
[1] We have carried out an empirical study of the seasonal cycle of nitrous oxide (N2O) using the data archived by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (NOAA-CMDL) Global Cooperative Air Sampling Network from 1977 to 2000. In order to isolate the seasonal cycle, we first detrended the data using least square polynomial fits. The rem...
